 Margaret Amelia Adams

Relationship: Margaret Amelia Adams is my 2nd great-grandmother on my father's mother's side.

Parents: She was born March 22, 1843, in Farmland, Randolph County, Indiana to Henry Adams and Lilly Newton Wilson.

The earliest record I have of Margaret is the 1850 US Census. She was living in Monroe Township, Randolph County, Indiana. The census lists her with both parents Henry Adams and Lilly Newton Wilson. It shows that her father Henry was 41 at the time of the census and was born in Maryland. He was a farmer and the value of his Real Estate owned was valued at $800. Lilly was 30 years old and born in the state of Delaware. Others listed are her half-brothers John Quincy Adams, James Edward Adams (both born in Maryland), and her full siblings William Henry Adams, Mary and Caroline Adams (all born in Indiana). This gives a close approximation of when the family moved to Indiana - in approximately 1840-1841. I have not been able to find her father in the 1840 census.

Here is a picture of her father Henry Adams.

It's not the best, but still an incredible find. I found this on Ancestry and it was uploaded by a person that calls herself ernurse1964. ernurse1964, thank you so much for sharing from another nurse descendant (me!). I was an OR nurse for the first half of my nursing career. ernurse1964 is a descendant through Margaret's half-brother John Quincy Adams.

A funny little story about this line comes to mind. My grandmother Nancy Louisa Campbell Dudley told me that her great-uncle was John Quincy Adams. She said this with a straight face, and no further explanation. As a child I believe I jumped to a little conclusion and believed that she meant the 6th president of the United States. When this grandmother died is when I began in earnest to do some genealogical research. One of the things I was trying to prove was that relationship to the 6th president of the United States. Well, I did not prove that, but what I did prove was that my grandmother had the best dry sense of humor of anyone I know! That little stinker of a grandmother. Yes, we are related to John Quincy Adams...just not THE John Quincy Adams (6th president of the US). You got me Grandma!

1860 Census: In the 1860 United States Federal Census Margaret is still living at home with her father, but her mother Lilly Newton Wilson died in 1855, and Henry has married for the 3rd time on 14 February 1956 to Ann Mills Ford. I do wonder if this is how Margaret will meet her husband Joseph Nelson Mills? Ann Mills is the daughter of Morgan Mills and Rebecca Jane Driver. Morgan is the brother of Jacob Mills - father of Joseph Nelson Mills.

Spouse: She married Joseph Nelson Mills on 28 July 1866 at Randolph County, Indiana. She would have been about 23 years of age and Joseph Nelson Mills was 18 years of age.

It appears that Joseph's mother signed for his permission to marry. Joseph's father Jacob Mills died in 1856 when Joseph would have been 8 years old. Joseph's mother would then marry for the 3rd time in 1856 to Charles Redpath. Which is why the permission comes from Mary H. Redpath.

Here is a picture of Margaret's husband Joseph Nelson Mills probably taken about the same time as Margaret's picture at top above.

1st two known children born in Indiana:
On 28 March 1867 Margaret and Joseph Mills welcomed their first child into the world.
Mary Rosetta Mills was born at Farmland, Randolph County, Indiana. She lived a short life and at just a little over 1 year and 3 months of age she died 4 July 1868.
Margaret was already pregnant with her 2nd child at the time of the death of her first child.
Phoebe Jane Mills was born a little more than 3 months after her sister died. Born 26 October 1868 also in Farmland, Randolph County, Indiana. Phoebe was most likely named after Joseph's oldest half-sister Phebe Mendenhall. And that Phebe was most likely named after her grand-mother Phoebe Canaday.

1870 Census: By 1870 a lot has changed in the life of Margaret Amelia Adams. Margaret and Joseph Nelson Mills are now living in Houston County, Minnesota. Joseph's mother Mary is listed as having died there in the 1870 Mortality Schedule for Houston County, Minnesota. Her cause of death was listed as Consumption also known as Tuberculosis. I have never found Charles Redpath in that 1870 census. This county lies across the Mississippi River from LaCrosse, Wisconsin, at the very furthest southeast corner of Minnesota. I have found some information which may be the reason Margaret and Joseph Mills moved with his mother to Minnesota. Joseph's Uncle Elisha Mills was living at this same location also in 1870 and 1880.

Picture of Joseph Nelson Mills' mother's death listed in the US Federal Census Mortality Schedules for 1870

1st known son born
Silas Nelson Mills was born 17 July 1870 in Houston, Houston County, Minnesota. Silas married and eventually moved his family to Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had one son: Charles DeHart Mills and he died 6 March 1927 at Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. As far as I know Charles DeHart Mills had no children.

Joseph and Margaret are back living in Indiana.
2nd known son born
Henry Orlando Mills was born 14 July 1877 in Montpelier, Blackford County, Indiana. Died 10 September 1879.

1880 Census: In 1880 Joseph and Margaret are listed as living in Nottingham Township, Wells County, Indiana.
Joseph Nelson Mills, White, Male, 32 years of age, Married, Farmer, Cannot write. Born in Indiana and does not list a place of birth of father or mother.
Margaret  A, White, Female, 37 years of age, Wife, Married, Keeping house. Born in Indiana, Father born in Maryland, Mother born in Maryland.
Phebe J., White, Female, 11 years old, daughter, At School, cannot read, Born in Indiana, Father born in Indiana, Mother born in Indiana.
Silas N, White, Male, 9 years old, Son, At School, Sick with Ague, Cannot read, Born in Minnesota, Father born in Indiana, Mother born in Indiana.

Ague is a term meaning sick with fever and chills.

One more known son was born after the 1880 census.
Jacob Earl Mills was born 8 September 1883 at Keystone, Wells County, Indiana. He married, but never had any known children.

1900 Census: In 1900 Joseph and Margaret are living in Harrison Township, Blackford County, Indiana. In the town of Montpelier.
Mills, Joseph N, Head of family, White, Male, Born April 1848, Age 52, Married, Married 33 years. Born in Indiana, Father born in Ohio, Mother born in N. Carolina, Laborer, Can read, Can write, Can Speak, Owns Free from Mortgage a House.

Mills, Jacob, Son, White, Male, Born September 1883, 16 years of age, Single, Born in Indiana, Father born in Indiana, Mother born in Indiana, Occupation: Oil well pumper, Can read, Can write, Can speak

In 1900 their daughter Phoebe was already married and living with her husband and 5 children in Muncie, Center Township, Delaware County, Indiana.
In 1900 their son Silas was already married and also living in Harrison Township, Blackford County, Indiana with his wife and one son. His occupation was also an Oil well pumper.

In 1907 Margaret Adams Mills (known here as Mrs. Joe Mills) placed a quilt containing 1560 pieces into an exhibit at the fair in Montpelier, Indiana. (I wish I had a picture - a color picture of the quilt!)

1910 Census: In 1910 Joseph and Margaret continue to live in Montpelier, Harrison Township, Blackford County, Indiana. They owned a house on Adams Street.
Mills, Joseph N, Head, Male, White, 62 years of age, Marriage 1, Married 42 years. Born in Indiana, Father born in Virginia, Mother born in Maryland. Speaks English. Occupation: Laborer, Odd Jobs, working own account, out of work: no, Number of weeks out of work in 1909: 10, Can read, Can write, Owns Free of a mortgage a house
--, Margret, Wife, Female, White, 67, Married 1, Married 42 years, Number of children: 5, number now living 3. Born in Indiana, Father born in Maryland, Mother born in Maryland, Speaks English, Occupation: None

In 1910 their daughter Phoebe is living back in Harrison Township, Blackford County, Indiana. Her husband Abraham Campbell was a laborer at a steel mill there. 6 of their 10 living children are still at home.
In 1910 their son Silas continues is living in Hartford City, Blackford County, Indiana. He is a Driller for an Oil well. His one son is now 12 years old.
In 1910 their son Jacob is living in Robinson, Crawford County, Illinois. He is married and has no children. His occupation is a Tool Dresser in the Oil fields.

On 15 October 1919 Margaret Amelia Adams Mills succumbed to a case of acute colitis and passed away in Harrison Township, Blackford County, Indiana at the age of  76. Here is a copy of her death certificate.

Here are pictures taken of church records, births, marriages and deaths from their family bible. Photo copies sent to me from my second cousin Linda Ann Campbell many years ago.

After a review of all 5 known children of Joseph and Margaret I do believe the only living descendants as of this post are from their daughter Phoebe Jane Mills. She had 10 children and all of them, but one have many living descendants. (23 April 2023)

Here is a picture of Joseph Nelson Mills and Margaret Amelia Adams in their later years at their house in Montpelier, Blackford County, Indiana - on Adams Street.

Margaret’s husband Joseph Nelson Mills died 12 May 1931 from apoplexy due to arteriosclerosis. Here is his death certificate. The death certificate is where I first obtained Joseph's mother's maiden name. It gave me a little piece of the puzzle, but then I had to find that she had married prior to Joseph and at the time of their marriage her last name was Mendenhall.

Malinda Cook Dudley

Relationship: Malinda Cook Dudley is my 2nd great-grandmother. She was born May 15, 1831, in Virginia, the daughter of Elizabeth "Betsie" Crawford and Abraham Cook. She married George Washington Dudley on 6 June 1850 in Hancock County, Indiana. They had eight children.
Parents: Abraham Cook born: 8 June 1793 in Virginia and died 17 December 1868 in Hancock County, Indiana, and Elizabeth "Betsie" Crawford born: March 1798 in Virginia and died 25 November 1875 in Warrington, Brown Township, Hancock County, Indiana.

Malinda Dudley is mentioned in her father Abraham Cook's will on 20 March 1867, however the document has the spelling of her name as Belinda Dudley.
He father Abrahm Cook arrived in Hancock County, Indiana prior to 1840 and is listed in the census in that county for that year. Abraham Cook passed away on 17 December 1868, in Hancock County, Indiana at the age of 75.

Malinda's husband George Washington Dudley passed away on April 9, 1875, in Hancock County, Indiana, at the age of 47. They had been married for 24 years.

Her mother Elizabeth "Betsie" Crawford Cook passed away on November 25, 1875, in Indiana.

In 1920 Malinda was 88 and living with her son Stanford Dudley and his wife Emma Jane Carpenter Dudley at 641 S. 23rd Street in New Castle, Henry County, Indiana.

She died on May 2, 1923, in New Castle, Henry County, Indiana, at the age of 91. She is buried at the Harlan Cemetery in Hancock County, Indiana.

Nancy V. “Sissy” Turner

Relationship: Nancy V. “Sissy” Turner
(3rd from left in picture above) is my 2nd great-grandmother.

When I first started researching my ancestors, one of the first people I learned about on my mother’s side was my 2nd great-grandmother Nancy V. Turner. Her daughter, my great-grandmother, Ada Johnson Solomon (the little girl with the doll in the picture above), lived until my 2nd year in college. I grew up in the same town where she lived.

In 1906, Nancy V. Turner died when her youngest child, Ada, was only 6 years old. Ada had already died by the time I started my genealogy journey, so I discussed my great-grandmother’s line with Ada’s youngest daughter Linnie Solomon Matney, and her oldest son James Fielding Solomon. Linnie gave me some notes on the family. I believe Linnie may have made some phone calls to get the birth and death dates of Nancy V. Turner and her children. It was then that I learned that the family had been through many tragedies. Linnie knew that almost all of Nancy’s children died young, but I didn’t learn why. After many years of searching, and getting into contact with a descendant of one of Nancy V. Turner’s siblings I found out that Nancy V. and almost all of her children, except the 2 youngest (Emmett and Ada, my great grandmother) had succumbed to Tuberculosis. After wondering where Emmett was, and asking my mother if she knew anything about him, I found out that Emmett also died young, but not of disease. I will cover Emmett in another post. Out of all 8 children of Nancy V. Turner, Ada was the only surviving child to live to an old age.

Here are pictures of the small pieces of paper that started me on my search. Some of the information on these slips of paper has since been proven to be in error.

Name: Nancy V. Turner On the documents above she is mentioned with her married name Nancy Johnson. The picture of her headstone that I have is where I found her maiden name. In 1970 her daughter Ada and some other family members took a trip to Mississippi and that is when the headstone picture was taken.

During my years of genealogy research and posting on genealogy boards looking for more information on this family I found a cousin that lived in Mississippi and she told me that the Turner family had known my 2nd great-grandmother Nancy V. Turner as “Sissy”. It was her nickname and how they all knew her. I have never found a source to help expand on the V. as her middle name, but I have often wondered if that could stand for Virginia as that is her own mother’s name.

Here is a picture of her headstone, and the writing on the back.

Parents: Anderson Luke Robinson Turner and Virginia “Ginny” Texas Stone

Birthdate: 7 August 1859

Nancy V. Turner’s birthdate has some inconsistencies. The small piece of paper above with the name Nancy Johnson has many errors, but from all other found sources it does seem to get the Month and date of Nancy’s birth correct. At one time I thought this information may have been for her daughter Nancy, but have since learned that it is not correct for her either.

The headstone of Nancy V. Turner Johnson lists her birth date as Aug. 7 1857.

The piece of paper above listed Aug 7 1887. There are some scribbles on that date for the second 8, and it appears the writer wasn’t sure either.

The 1860 census is the first census I find Nancy V. Turner. She is listed with her parents, and may help pinpoint a year for Nancy’s birth. The 1860 census was enumerated on 5 October 1860 and lists N.V. Turner as 1 year old at the time of the census. With Nancy’s birth day and month of 7 August, she would have already had her birthday for the year 1860. Turning 1 in 1860 makes her birthdate 7 August 1859.

Year: 1860; Census Place: Winston, Mississippi; Page: 723; Family History Library Film: 803594

The 1870 census lists Nannie B. (Nancy V.) as being 9 years old at the time of the census. The census was enumerated on 28 June 1970. Nancy would not have had her birthdate for the year yet as she was born in August. If she was born in 1859 as stated above, that would place her at 9 years of age.

Year: 1870; Census Place: Beat 5, Neshoba, Mississippi; Roll: M593; Page: 176.

The 1880 census shows Nancy Z. (Nancy V.) married and living with her husband James Johnson. The census was enumerated on 23/24 day of June 1880. Nancy is listed as 19. The is consistent with the above 1860, 1870 census and confirms the birthdate of 7 August 1859.

Year: 1880; Census Place: Edinburg, Leake, Mississippi; Roll: 653; Family History Film: 1254653; Page: 342D; Enumeration District: 048; Image: 0691.

There is no surviving 1890 census.

The 1900 census is the last census that Nancy is listed. This census lists Nancy as 42 years old and lists her birth month and year as August 1857. This is the first and only census to list the same month and year as listed on her headstone. The 7 in the year 1857 seems to have been manipulated and possibly changed on this document.

Year: 1900; Census Place: Edinburg, Leake, Mississippi; Roll: T623_816; Page: 11A; Enumeration District: 29.

After a review of all the sources I have for her birth date, I find that the most consistent date is 7 August 1859.

Marriage: 6 November 1879 Leake County, Mississippi

Nancy V. Turner married James Richard Johnson in Leake County, Mississippi.

On a trip to Mississippi with my mom and daughter around the year 2004, I was able to take a picture of the marriage bond from the original old books at the courthouse.

Children:

1. Joe C. Johnson
Born 11 July 1881 Leake County, Mississippi
Died 12 March 1907 from Tuberculosis.
    Age at death: 25
Joe is one of the few children of Nancy that married and had children.
Married: 1 January 1905 Leake County, Mississippi
    Spouse: Annie P. Minshew
At the time of Joe’s death Annie was pregnant. Their son Jodie William Johnson was born 23 October 1907. Joe never got to meet his son. The most probable conception dates for Jodie were from January 23, 1907 to February 1, 1907. Which means his wife was only 1 month pregnant at the time of Joe’s death.

One of the descendants of Jodie William Johnson posted a picture of the family onto ancestry in the last year and that was the first time I got to see a picture of any of the family members other than my great-grandmother. What a wonderful, sharing thing for that person to do. It is the family picture at the top of this post.

2. Luke Johnson
Born: January 1883 Leake County, Mississippi
Luke is the only child that I do not have any death information. Some people believe he was working as a farm hand in 1910 and then died a few years later. I have not been able to confirm the information.

3. Joshua Johnson
Born: 15 May 1887 Leake County, Mississippi
Died:  21 April 1912 from Tuberculosis.
    Age at death: 24

4. Virginia D. Johnson - known as “Virgie”
Born: 18 May 1889 Leake County, Mississippi
Died: 26 July 1908 from Tuberculosis
    Age at death: 19

5. Nancy J. Johnson
Born: 5 July 1891 Leake County, Mississippi
Died: 21 June 1911 from Tuberculosis
    Age at death: 19

6. Lucy S. Johnson
Born: 1 May 1894 Leake County, Mississippi
Died: 3 September 1896 - unknown cause of death

Emmett and his wife Linnie Moore were married and living in Kosciusko, Mississippi at the time of the 1920 US Census. Emmett’s sister Ada named her 2nd daughter Linnie Louise Solomon after Emmet’s wife.
Emmett Johnson and Linnie Moore had 3 children:
            Margaret Lucile Johnson
                Born: 17 March 1920

Married: Joyce A. Miller - 1 June 1953 Glasgow, Valley County, Montana
Death: 28 May 1993 New Castle, Henry County, Indiana

Death: 19 November 1906 - Mississippi
Age at death: 47

Unfortunately, Nancy V. “Sissy” Turner died  from Tuberculosis. In the early 1900’s Tuberculosis was a known death sentence. It was also a long sentence of suffering before dying. Sufferers of the disease had an average of three years to live at the time of diagnosis. Those years would have been filled with coughing, chest pains, and malnutrition. It was the second leading cause of death in the United States in 1900.

Ada never forgot her mother and went back to Mississippi several times to visit her mother’s gravesite. Here is a picture of her on her last trip.

Bertha Anna Parish

Relationship: Bertha Anna Parish is my great-grandmother.

I chose Bertha for this ancestor blog post for several reasons. The most compelling reason is that out of all eight great-grandparents she is the only one that I have never seen an image. That’s right, I don’t have a picture of her.  If anyone reads this and has a picture of her I would be very grateful if they would share.

Name: My family tree has her name as Bertha Anna Parish. I have seen the surname Parish spelled with one r or two. Her father’s headstone has the name spelled with one r, and I will use that spelling. The only source I have for her middle name as Anna is a marriage license application for her son Ralph Scott. This same marriage license application lists her last name as Perry. Ralph was only 3 years old when his mother Bertha died, and Parish can sound like Perry, especially if someone was listening to the name and the person pronouncing the name did not pronounce the ending with an emphasis on the ish.

Her father’s headstone:

Ralph Scott’s marriage license application:

Parents: James Robert Parish and Laura Emaline Joyce

Birthdate: 25 December 1878 Unfortunately, Bertha’s birthdate has some inconsistencies. The only sources I have for her birth date are the 1880 and 1900 censuses, her tombstone and her death certificate. Her death certificate and tombstone list her birthdate as 25 December 1879.

I don’t feel confident in trusting the death certificate and tombstone for the date of birth.  Those records are only as good as the person’s memory that gave the information. They are not primary sources.

So, I dug a little deeper into the issue.

The 1880 census lists her as 1 year old. The census was enumerated 29 June 1880. The question for age on the 1880 census reads: Age at last birthday prior to June 1, 1880. If under 1 year, give months in fractions, thus: 3/12.

Her age on the 1880 census is listed as 1. If she was born in December 1879 she would have only been 6 months of age on 1 June 1880 and therefore the census taker would have documented her age as 6/12.

Here is a look at that 1800 census.

Year: 1880; Census Place: Moral, Shelby, Indiana; Roll: 310; Family History Film: 1254310; Page: 150D; Enumeration District: 201; Image: 0022.

So, I have one more place to look, the 1900 census.

The 1900 census is a great source for birthdays. The question in 1900 reads as follows:  Date of birth - Month. Date of birth - Year. And Age at last birthday.

Bertha’s entry reads Dec 1878 and she is listed as 21 years of age. The census was enumerated on the 10th and 11th day of June 1900. These numbers for this census add up correctly.

Here is a look at the 1900 census:

Year: 1900; Census Place: Brandywine, Hancock, Indiana; Roll: T623_375; Page: 5A; Enumeration District: 36.

It’s a long way to come to this conclusion and it’s not what almost everyone (besides me) has recorded as her birthdate on all the available online family trees, but I am pretty solid with December 1878 as being as correct as I can be. Since the tombstone and death certificate both give the day as the 25th, I do believe that is probably the correct date. I think family would remember a Christmas birthday, even if they didn’t remember the exact year.

Marriage: 22 December 1895 Hancock County, Indiana, USA

To: John Stephen Scott

Unfortunately, I don’t have an image of the marriage license application or marriage license. The only source I have is a WPA index.

Hancock County Indiana; Index to Marriage Record 1828-1920 Inclusive Volum, W. P. A. Original Record Located County Clerk's Of; Book: C- 9; Page: 178

Birth of Children:

25 October 1896 - Everett Leroy Scott
25 October 1900 - Ralph Irvin Scott
17 May 1903 - Claude Robert Scott

Death: 10 November 1903

Per the death certificate Bertha battled problems with her gallbladder for 6 months and had peritonitis for 24 hours prior to her passing. Her 3rd son Claude was born 6 months before she died. She was only 24 years old and had 3 young sons.

Here is a look at her death certificate:

I am saddened by her early departure for her, but also for her 3 small children. Her youngest son Claude was just shy of 6 months of age at her death. I can only image, in 1903, the hardship that put on the family and the baby.

Burial: Bertha A. Scott is her name on a headstone at New Palestine Cemetery, Hancock County, Indiana, USA. Her name is listed on the same headstone with her husband and her husband’s second wife, also a Bertha. I do not know what year the headstone was placed.
Her death certificate lists a possible burial at another cemetery. It lists she would be buried at Crown Point Cemetery that is in Indianapolis. I have been to the New Palestine Cemetery in Hancock County, Indiana and I can confirm that her headstone is at that location. I have no other information on burial at Crown Point.
Here is a picture of her headstone:

It’s a genealogy blog.

This is new to me. I’ve never wanted to write, or ever enjoyed writing, so this is pushing me out of my comfort zone.

I am taking this on because I want to share the family history that I have been collecting for more than 30 years. My plan is to pick an ancestor and do a page on basic information of what I know about their life. I am going to attempt to give information on that particular ancestor in a time-line fashion. However, I don’t often do things in a linear fashion, so don’t expect that I will always achieve what I’m setting out to do.

For this very first blog post I’m going to list some of the surnames I hope to cover. These are all ancestor names in my family tree. For the future posts I may cover direct ancestors, or I may pick siblings, spouses, or children etc. I am hoping to keep each blog post to one person, but I don’t really know how it will go. There may be some people that need more than one blog post, and there may be a person that I bring into a post and then never do a full blog on them. I guess we will find out together how this will shape up.

In the future I may branch out and cover some of my husband’s line also. Who knows what you will get on this ride? Not me, not yet!

Here is my list of surnames.

My known paternal surnames: Dudley, Barber, Snow, Cook, Fleischman, Wilhoit, Blankenbaker, Crawford, Carpenter, Fawcett, Painter, Bicknell, Parks, Collier, Williamson, Thompson, Ford, Phillips, Marlow, Campbell, Covert, VanZandt, Black, McClymonds, Hanna, Brown, Tindall, Ambler, Mills, Spray, Adams, Cannon, Wilson, Newton, Russell.

My known maternal surnames: Scott, Salyer, Gunn, Murren, Alyea, Mouwersie, Abbott, Bridges, Scudder, Marsh, Morford, Whitehead, Parish, Wright, Tucker, Means, Joyce, Edwards, Smith, Murnan, Adren, Weston, Young, Solomon, Pritchett, Richardson, Glines, Garnett, Lawrence, Antrim, Seagrave, Paulin, Hewitt, Johnson, Peace, Wade, Lovorn, Lyle, Homan, Turner, Stone, Nunn, Akers, Brown.

Here I go. I’m almost ready to push publish. It’s a big step for me, so be patient and kind. Send me a message and let me know if you find something interesting or wish to discuss something I’ve posted.

No turning back now!
